What is Tectonic?

Tectonic by Apollo rewrites the overworld's terrain shaping. True mountain ranges wall off the horizon above sweeping valleys and deeper oceans, and cave entrances yawn open like canyon mouths beneath dramatic cliff faces. It changes landforms rather than biomes, which makes it the natural partner for biome mods.

Like Terralith, it ships as datapack or mod for Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge, building from vanilla blocks.

What Changes and What Pairs

  • Scale: mountains regularly crest far above vanilla's typical peaks, with weather-appropriate snowlines and layered rock faces; expect genuine alpine expeditions rather than hill hops.
  • Underground: expanded cave entrance shapes and reworked underground transitions keep spelunking coherent with the bigger surface.
  • Oceans and rivers deepen and widen to match the landmass drama.
  • Performance: generation cost is comparable to vanilla; pre-generate with Chunky for big servers as usual.

Pairings:

  • Terralith + Tectonic is the flagship combo (Stardust-adjacent tuning exists specifically for it): Terralith paints the biomes, Tectonic sculpts the ground they sit on.
  • Works under BOP/BWG biome injection as well; load-order guidance lives on the project page.
  • Elytra travel, Distant Horizons, and shader screenshots all benefit disproportionately from the horizon-scale terrain.

Tectonic FAQ

Does Tectonic change biomes?

No, it reshapes terrain: elevation, cliffs, caves, and water depth. Biome mods layer on top, which is why Terralith plus Tectonic is a standard pairing.

Can I add Tectonic to an existing world?

New chunks adopt the terrain, creating visible seams at old-chunk borders. Fresh worlds (or pre-planned border expansion) give the intended result.
