What is Sophisticated Storage?

Sophisticated Storage brings the Sophisticated Backpacks upgrade system to stationary storage: chests, barrels, shulker-style boxes, and limited-slot barrels, all upgradeable through wood, copper, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite tiers. Upgrade kits apply in place, so your starter chest grows into an endgame vault without moving a single stack.

The same upgrade cards work here too, from magnets and compacting through void, filter, and hopper upgrades, which turns individual storage blocks into small machines.

Key Features

  • Tier upgrade kits raise slot counts in place (a netherite chest holds well over a hundred slots before stack upgrades).
  • Stack Upgrades multiply per-slot capacity, stacking multiplicatively into the thousands per slot.
  • Hopper Upgrade pulls and pushes to adjacent inventories; Pickup, Magnet, Void, Compacting, Smelting, and filter upgrades behave as they do in backpacks.
  • Storage Controller links storage blocks connected via Storage Link blocks so you deposit into the whole wall by clicking one block; it also answers to pipes as a single inventory.
  • Paintable and wood-typed variants match any build's palette, with two-layer dyeing.
  • Shulker-style boxes keep contents when broken, tier upgrades included.

Tip: A diamond barrel with three stack upgrades quietly outclasses most early digital storage for bulk items, at a fraction of the cost. Many players run Sophisticated walls as bulk mass storage behind an AE2 or RS Storage Bus.

Sophisticated Storage FAQ

How do I upgrade a Sophisticated Storage chest tier?

Craft the tier upgrade kit (for example Iron to Gold) and right-click it onto the placed chest or apply it in a crafting grid. Contents and upgrades stay put.

What does the Storage Controller do?

It merges linked storage blocks into one logical inventory for player deposits and pipe access. Link range extends through Storage Link blocks.

Do stack upgrades work on unstackable items?

No, unstackables stay one per slot. Keep tools and armor in regular slots or a dedicated block and reserve stack-upgraded storage for bulk materials.
