What is Mekanism?

Mekanism is a tech mod for Minecraft built around industrial machinery and chemical processing at serious scale. It runs on Forge and NeoForge and appears in most major tech modpacks, including the All the Mods series. The mod is known for its tiered ore processing, which multiplies raw ore yields up to five times, and for late-game hardware such as the Digital Miner, fission and fusion reactors, and the MekaSuit.

Mekanism uses its own energy unit, Joules, and converts automatically to and from Forge Energy (FE), so its generators and machines work alongside other tech mods without adapters. Three companion modules extend the base mod: Mekanism Generators (reactors and advanced power), Mekanism Tools (tool and armor sets), and Mekanism Additions (balloons, glow panels, and extras).

Getting Started

Early Mekanism progress centers on Osmium and Steel.

  1. Mine Osmium Ore. It generates in the overworld at a rate similar to iron and smelts into Osmium Ingots with any pickaxe of stone tier or better.
  2. Build a Heat Generator. It burns furnace fuels or generates passive power from adjacent lava, and it produces enough Joules to run your first machines.
  3. Craft a Metallurgic Infuser. This is the gateway machine. It combines an infusion material (carbon, redstone, diamond, or bio fuel) with a base item.
  4. Make Steel. Infuse Iron Ingots with carbon to get Enriched Iron, then infuse that with more carbon to get Steel Dust. Smelt the dust into Steel Ingots.
  5. Craft Basic Control Circuits. Infuse Osmium Ingots with redstone. Circuits gate every machine recipe in the mod.
  6. Connect everything with Basic Universal Cables. Cables move Joules between generators and machines and auto-convert FE from other mods.

From there, an Enrichment Chamber (2x ore yield) and an Energized Smelter give you a complete powered smelting line.

Ore Processing Tiers

Ore multiplication is Mekanism's headline feature. Each tier adds machines and chemical inputs in front of the previous tier.

A practical route is to run 2x from day one, then add the Purification Chamber (3x) once an Electrolytic Separator is making oxygen from water. Treat 4x and 5x as dedicated builds with piped chemical lines, connecting the stages with the mod's own transport: Pressurized Tubes for gases, Mechanical Pipes for fluids, and Logistical Transporters for the items themselves.

Tip: Factory machines are multi-slot upgrades of the basic machines, climbing from Basic through Advanced and Elite to Ultimate. A single Elite Smelting Factory replaces eight furnaces and keeps one cable run.

Power Generation

Mekanism scales power production from passive early-game options to multiblock reactors (with the Mekanism Generators module installed).

  • Heat Generator – burns solids or sits in lava; first-day power.
  • Wind Generator – passive output that increases with altitude; place it high.
  • Solar and Advanced Solar Generators – daytime power, stackable.
  • Gas-Burning Generator – burns Ethylene made from bio fuel; a compact mid-game setup that runs on farms.
  • Fission Reactor – multiblock that burns Fissile Fuel and produces steam for Industrial Turbines. High output with real meltdown risk if cooling fails.
  • Fusion Reactor – endgame multiblock fueled by deuterium and tritium; enormous, stable output.

Store energy in an Energy Cube or an Induction Matrix, a resizable multiblock battery that holds the output of an entire reactor complex.

Endgame: Digital Miner, MekaSuit, and More

  • Digital Miner – a configurable quarry in a single block. Set a filter (ore dictionary, item, or mod), a radius up to 32 blocks, and it teleports matching blocks into its buffer. Pair it with an Anchor Upgrade for chunk loading.
  • Atomic Disassembler and Meka-Tool – powered multi-tools that replace pickaxe, shovel, axe, and sword. The Meka-Tool accepts modules for silk touch, teleportation, and vein mining.
  • MekaSuit – modular powered armor. Slots accept modules such as jetpack flight, elytra, magnetic attraction, radiation shielding, and gravitational modulation for creative-style flight.
  • QIO (Quantum Item Orchestration) – a wireless, searchable item storage network with crafting windows, Mekanism's answer to digital storage.
  • Teleporter – multiblock portals between fixed points, cross-dimension capable.

Most endgame recipes need Polonium or Antimatter, which pull you through the fission and Supercritical Phase Shifter chains, so plan reactor infrastructure before starting the MekaSuit.

Is Mekanism available for Fabric?

No. Mekanism officially supports Forge and NeoForge only. Versions for Minecraft 1.21.1 use NeoForge, while 1.20.1 and earlier use Forge.

What is the fastest way to get 5x ore processing in Mekanism?

Build the full chemical line: Chemical Dissolution Chamber (sulfuric acid) into Chemical Washer into Chemical Crystallizer, then feed crystals through the 4x, 3x, and 2x stages. It requires steady sulfur, water, and power, so most players build it after a Gas-Burning Generator or fission setup.

What energy does Mekanism use, and does it work with FE?

Mekanism uses Joules internally and converts to and from Forge Energy automatically. Universal Cables connect directly to FE machines and batteries from other mods.

How do you prevent radiation in Mekanism?

Radiation comes from fission meltdowns and mishandled nuclear waste. Store waste in Radioactive Waste Barrels, keep fission burn rates within cooling capacity, and wear a full Hazmat Suit or radiation-shielded MekaSuit when working near active reactors.
