What is Embeddium?
Embeddium by embeddedt is the port that carried Sodium's rendering engine to Forge and NeoForge during the years Sodium itself was Fabric-only. It powered the performance stack of most big Forge packs (All the Mods included), prioritizing compatibility with the Forge mod ecosystem over raw feature parity.
With Sodium now publishing official NeoForge builds, Embeddium's role is historical on current versions: its final releases cover up to Minecraft 1.21.4, and development has ended.
Which Mod on Which Version
| Your setup | Recommended renderer |
|---|---|
| Forge 1.16.5 – 1.20.1 | Embeddium (or the older Rubidium it superseded) |
| NeoForge 1.20.4 – 1.21.4 | Embeddium or Sodium (as official support arrived) |
| NeoForge current versions | Sodium officially |
| Fabric, any version | Sodium |
Shader users on Forge pair Embeddium with Oculus (the Iris port), and the "Embeddium++/Extra" addons mirrored Sodium Extra's toggles. If you maintain a legacy 1.20.1 Forge pack, Embeddium remains the correct, stable choice; for anything newer, start from Sodium.
Embeddium FAQ
Is Embeddium still maintained?
No, development wound down after Sodium added official NeoForge support; final builds target up to 1.21.4. Existing versions remain widely used in legacy Forge packs.
Embeddium or Rubidium?
Embeddium superseded Rubidium as the maintained Sodium port on Forge 1.18–1.20; use Embeddium where both exist for a version.
