What is Biomes O' Plenty?

Biomes O' Plenty (BOP) is one of the longest-running world generation mods for Minecraft, maintained by Forstride and Adubbz since the 1.5 era. It adds dozens of new overworld biomes plus Nether and End variants, each with custom trees, plants, and blocks that blend with vanilla generation.

The mod ships new wood sets — fir, redwood, mahogany, jacaranda, palm, willow, magic, umbran, hellbark, and more — which makes it as much a building-block mod as an exploration mod. On 1.18+ it generates biomes through the TerraBlender library, so BOP regions interleave with vanilla and other TerraBlender mods rather than replacing them.

Setup for Single-Player and Servers

Single-player: install Biomes O' Plenty and TerraBlender, create a world, and BOP biomes appear automatically alongside vanilla ones on 1.18+. On 1.16.5 and older, choose the "Biomes O' Plenty" world type on the world creation screen.

Servers (1.16.5 and older): set the level type before first world generation in server.properties:

level-type = biomesoplenty

Servers (1.18+): no level-type change is needed; TerraBlender handles region injection into the default world type.

Biome frequency is tunable through TerraBlender's region weight config, which is the setting to adjust when you want more or fewer BOP biomes relative to vanilla.

Tip: BOP coexists with Terralith and Oh The Biomes We've Gone in the same world; each mod claims its own share of generation weight through TerraBlender.

Notable Biomes and Blocks

A few frequently searched highlights from the biome roster:

  • Mystic Grove – glowing fungal forest with magic trees and unique flowers.
  • Ominous Woods – dark, foggy forest built from umbran wood; a natural spooky-build setting.
  • Redwood Forest – towering redwood trunks for large-scale timber.
  • Lavender Field – rolling purple plains popular for cottage builds and screenshots.
  • Wasteland – barren dried-out terrain with its own flora and dead trees.
  • Nether additions such as the Crystalline Chasm bring amethyst-toned caves to the dimension.

Every biome contributes blocks: colored foliage, mud (predating vanilla's), rose quartz, glowing moss, and full wood sets with fences, doors, and boats. Nature's Compass is the standard companion mod for locating a specific BOP biome quickly.

Biomes O' Plenty FAQ

What loaders does Biomes O' Plenty run on?

Forge and NeoForge are the primary targets, with Fabric builds also published for recent Minecraft versions. TerraBlender is a required dependency on 1.18 and newer.

How do I enable Biomes O' Plenty on a server?

For 1.18+ servers, install the mod and TerraBlender; generation works with the default level type. For 1.16.5 and older, set level-type to biomesoplenty in server.properties before the world first generates.

Does Biomes O' Plenty work with Terralith?

Yes. Both use TerraBlender-style region weighting on modern versions, so their biomes mix in one world. Expect fewer of each mod's biomes than when running either alone.
